REACHING SUSTAINABILITY IN URBAN PLANNING -Continuing Education Course

Aim of the Course Reaching Sustainability in Urban Planning is an extension course for
the previous continuing education courses on Sustainable Communities. This web-based
continuing education course addresses sustainable urbanization by giving practical
examples and methods how to use city planning as a tool for sustainable development. The
course focuses particularly on inclusive planning and climate change prevention and
adaptation. Participation, good governance, crisis prevention and environmentally sound
basic services are key topics presented in the course. The course aims to elaborate the
topics of the previous courses, deepen the analysis of the individual case studies and
strengthen the existing Alumni network. By using the knowledge of the students and their
real life cases, the course provides in-depth understanding of planning procedures in
different cultures, presents realities faced as well as offers insight to diverse
pioneering ways to reach the obstacles. Course Content The course is structured by
on-line lectures, group works and individual assignments to exchange information between
the participants and the lecturers as well as to enhance communication and professional
networking among the participants. In the course the participants will present their own
case studies about the planning methods used and the obstacles faced. The course aims to
follow-up the situation of the participant?s case studies during the last years and to
develop the case studies further collaboratively with the course participants. The
students will make further analyses of the cases by exploiting the new information gained
from the course as well as the comments of their colleagues. The course duration is
approximately five months (6th of October, 2010 to 20th of February, 2011). There will be
organized online sessions every third week and between these sessions the participants
will work individually with the cases (reading and searching for relevant reading
material and analyzing the case studies). The case studies are presented, discussed and
analyzed in the tailored on-line workshops in the Flash meeting platform. The final
comments to the cases and the analyses are given by the course mentors and the given
experts. Target Group The course is targeted for individuals who have participated in the
Sustainable Communities course - Bridging the Gap between Research and Action - in
2007-2009 and for the PhD students that have acted as resource persons in these courses.
The course accommodates totally 24 students. Credits and Assessment Reaching
Sustainability in Urban Planning continuation education course offers 6 credits for those
students who have participated 80% of the group works and submitted the needed analyses
by the deadline of the course (20th of February, 2011). The course is graded 1-5. The
final mark will consist of the evaluation of the on-line group works and the written
assignments. Registration Fee The registration fee for the course is 50 Euros (64 US$).
